Google Classroom - Tonight, for the first time, students are asked to log onto Google Classroom in order to complete one part of their homework. Once your child is logged onto their GUSD Google account, can click on the app for Google Classroom, if you have it loaded. Otherwise, go to classroom.google.com. Tonight's assignment is to share a video about UNICEF with the family.
Reminder - No school for students on Friday, October 27th
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF - Last month we read about the damage and flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and along the Gulf Coast in Scholastic News and Newsela. Then we followed Hurricane Irma's effects in Florida and the Caribbean. Finally, we learned about Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico and the Caribbean again. When we read about the third grade girl whose family was affected by the flooding, we decided we wanted to do something to help. So we've decided as a class to participate in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. On a voluntary basis, children are bringing home a box to collect donations. If your child wishes to participate but you do not want them to carry a box while trick-or-treating, I hope that you will allow them to do an extra chore to help your family so they can earn a bit of money to contribute. The amount of money is not as important as supporting their desire to help those in need, especially children like themselves.
TenMarks - This online math resource gives students valuable practice on various math concepts. Right now we are working on multiplication, including different ways to model multiplication and different strategies to solve multiplication problems. While it will eventually be important for students to know the basic facts, that is not our main focus at this point. More important is for students to understand what multiplication is. The student who asks, "Do I add or multiply? Or subtract?" when faced with a word problem indicates that they don't understand what they are doing, no matter how quickly they can rattle off basic facts. One reason I really like TenMarks is that each problem offers 3 hints and 1 video to help a student who isn't sure how to proceed. PLEASE make sure that your child is using the hints and videos. If s/he does get a problem wrong, be sure to watch the explanation of the problem after.
We are out of tissues! If you are able to send a box or two, please do. Thanks!
UCLA vs Arizona State - Mrs. Faieta has a number of free tickets to the November 11th football game at the Rose Bowl. The time of the game has not been published yet, but if you would like tickets for your family, please let me know how many you want ASAP. This is a special program to promote interest in college at an early stage of a student's life.
