We had a thoroughly enjoyable class potluck and party, and we enjoyed having so many family members join us. Our day was saddened only by the fact that four of our students are still sick and weren't able to join us. I hope that they are on the mend and can enjoy a healthy (and therefore much more fun) winter break. See you all next year --- on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.
Holiday Potluck & Party - For all who are healthy enough to come to school (we had four students absent today - the fewest in two weeks!) we are looking forward to our potluck lunch and board games/card games party. Click here to go to our online sign-up sheet, which also has all the details for the party. An additional reminder is in today's Thursday folder. Please remember: NO NUTS of any kind, please, due to students allergies.
With so many students absent over the past two weeks, I've needed to revise lesson plans so as not to leave half the class behind. The silver lining has been the opportunity to spend a lot of time in writing workshop. Only a handful of students have completed their final draft, but we'll pick up in January and get those personal narratives published, then invite our families to a Publishing Party at 8:00 one morning. Watch for details here (our class website) and in the Thursday folder and agenda. I Love My Neighborhood poster contest - The annual contest for artwork to be used for next year's Thursday folder has begun. This year's theme is:
Hour of Code Week - Last week was the International Hour of Code, designed to promote computer coding with kids. The website Code.org (on which your child has an account as we use Course D as part of our technology learning) has a number of activities specifically for Hour of Code. Students who were at school last week worked on two activities:
Common Sense Media - If you haven't checked out this independent, nonprofit source of information about all types of media (e.g., video games, online games, movies, books) you should. Click here to check out their expert reviews, objective advice, and helpful tools. Children are getting their first cell phone at younger and younger ages --- my sons received their first cell phones the Christmas before they went to college. How times have changed! Many (but not all) students in our class have cell phones. If you are considering a cell phone for your child, you might consider this article worth reading. We've had a week of sniffles and absentees, and I know that many of you have had far worse at home. Today we still had eight students out, including three who were absent for the first time. It doesn't look like we are through this yet. Please know that here at school we've been washing our hands like crazy and drinking lots of water. Please keep your child at home until they are healthy --- not everyone has had the flu, but everyone has had symptoms that make them contagious. For more information on the flu, click here for the CDC's Influenza (Flu) page.
Holiday Potluck and Party - We are all looking forward to our holiday potluck lunch and afternoon party this Friday, December 20 starting at 11:00am. The online sign-up link has been on the Homework page for a week, but some have had difficulty finding it. Click here to go to the sign-up page. Please remember: NO NUTS in any dish. Complete details came home on a half-sheet in last week's Thursday folder. We're on! The office was able to find us a bus, so our field trip to the Hollywood Bowl is on for this Friday, December 6. The details are the same as before:
Unfortunately, not all of our parent chaperones are able to come on Friday, so if you are available (and have current TB test paperwork on file) I'd love to have you join us. Please email me right away. Thanks! Mystery Science Minis - We're working on our Glendale brochures in Social Studies, but are finding time for a couple of Mystery Science Minis. The links below will be live for ten days, and I'm sure you'd have fun reviewing them with your child: Our field trip scheduled for this Wednesday has been cancelled due to the forecast of rain that day. We have been offered an alternate date of Friday, but have not yet been able to secure a bus to transport us. If we are able to reschedule the trip, I will post the information here and I'll send home a flier. I hope to know tomorrow.
If we are able to go, I have room for another parent chaperone so, if you have a current TB test result on file in the office and are able to join us, please email me. |
