Reading - We cracked the first Benchmark "texts for close reading." This first topic, Government for the People, is chock full of interesting information and history about our country. Our essential question is: Why do people participate in government? A good question, to be sure. Perhaps one or more of these names will spark a conversation with your child:
- LBJ (President Johnson)
- MLK
- Fargo, North Dakota
- federal/state/city
- citizens/responsibilities/volunteers
Math - This morning, we worked with counters to model multiplication by making arrays. This is something that's easy for your child to do at home. Just get a handful of something (pennies, dried lima beans, same sized Lego pieces, whatever) and count out a number. Let's say 12:
- Make an array (rows with an equal number in each row) - you must make equal rows with none left over.
- 2 rows will work (6 in each row)
- 3 rows (of 4 items) will work
- 5 rows will NOT work (2 items left over - not enough for 3 in each row)
One last thing - I'm emailing a Google Form asking for your permission for your child to participate in virtual Flip events. I want us to be a part of the 9/11 Day and the Power of Good Deeds on Monday (also Dot Day coming up) but Flip has changed their terms and requires me to confirm that I have parent permission prior. My classes have participated for years with not a complaint - it's all great content - but now I need your permission. So please complete that Google Form right away. Thanks!
